Welcome!
Welcome to our site. We are experienced family law attorneys. We guide our clients through the confusing legal maze they face when they go through a Virginia divorce, Virginia child custody proceedings, an adoption or a criminal case in the Juvenile Court.
We have created this website to help you learn more about the Virginia laws regarding divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support and juvenile justice. The articles on this site are not legal advice. They are general explanations that are written in plain English that we hope will help you to better understand the law and the court system.
We hope that, after reading the articles on our site, you will have a better picture of the rules and how things work in court.
If you need a professional to protect you and your interests, this is what we do:
Divorce
Divorce is really very simple. The court changes your marital status from married to single. That’s the easy part. The details are the hard part. What should happen to your property? Who should pay your debts? Will one spouse have to keep supporting the other? Where will the children live? Who will provide the money to support them? How will they maintain their relationship with both parents. These are the hard questions that have to be answered when people divorce. We make sure our clients understand their rights and, if necessary, we fight for them in court.
Child Custody
Children are the innocent bystanders in a divorce. They still need support and protection from their parents, no matter what the parents think and feel about each other. If the parents can’t agree about where the children should live and when they should see the parent they don’t live with, a judge has to decide what’s best for them. We protect our client’s relationship with their children and ensure that everyone is treated fairly when child support is computed.
Adoption
Adoption can be a great gift to a child who needs a good home. But people seeking to give that gift face hurdles on the way to adopting a child. We help our clients over those hurdles. We provide the advice and guidance they need, whether they are doing a step-parent adoption, a close relative adoption, an interstate adoption, or a foreign adoption.
Juvenile Court
Most parents come into contact with the Juvenile Justice System when their child is out of control and they have to ask the court for help in imposing discipline or when their child is charged with a crime. We help parents who need the court’s assistance and we defend children when they face criminal charges. Diane Fener compiled a list of service providers for the Public Defender Commission. Over the years, our office has kept the list up-to-date. Feel free to download her Juvenile Resource Book.
